UNIT 1INTRODUCTION AND INORGANIC CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES

ROLE OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERS IN PROCESS INDUSTRIES
Chemical engineers translate process developed in the lab into practical applications for the commercialization of products and then work to maintain and improve those processes.
They relay on the main foundation of engineering – math physics and chemistry
The main role of chemical engineers is to design and troubleshoot processes for the production of chemicals, fuels, foods, pharmaceuticals and biological.
They are most often employed by large scale manufacturing plants to maximize productivity and product quality while minimizing costs
The aerospace, automatic, biomedical, electronic, the environmental, medical and military industries seek the skills of chemical engineers to help, develop and improve their technical products.
Chemical engineers work in almost every industry and affect the production of almost every article manufactured on the industrial scale
Some typical tasks,
Ensuring complaints with health, safety and environmental regulation.
Conducting research into improved manufacturing processes.
Designing and planning equipment layout.
Incorporating safety procedures for working with dangerous chemicals.
Monitoring and optimizing the performance of production processes.

Estimating production costs.

BLOCK DIAGRAM AND FLOWSHEETS
Block diagram
It is a rectangular box which gives the graphical layout of various steps in a process.

Eg:

Flow sheet or flowchart
It is the visualization of process in terms of physical equipment to carry out the operation of chemical process. This is an essential step for formulating the design process.
